Family Business est une co-proprieté en temps partagé, gratuite et à but non lucratif, ouverte aux expérimentations et aux formats d’exposition impertinents, initiée par Maurizio Cattelan et Massimiliano Gioni et soutenue par le Center of Curatorial Studies du Bard College aux Etats-Unis.
Nadja Argyropoulou est le guest (ou ghost) curateur de Family Business.
Jusqu’à récemment , Family Business menait ses activités à New-York. La famille a brusquement disparu de son espace à Chelsea et refait son apparition à Paris, depuis la crypte de la Chalet Society. En réponse au penchant curatorial de Marc-Olivier Wahler pour les tours de magie et en dialogue libre avec la collection vertigineuse de Jim Shaw présentée actuellement à la Chalet Soceity, Family Business invite des entités, des personnes et des pratiques dans le cadre d’un programme intitulé Les Grands Transparents. In Practice et divisé en Vol. I – Décembre 2013 et Vol. II – Janvier 2014.

Programme
15h – 19h Saprophytes et leur supplément intertextuel à la Théogonie d’Hésiode, intitulé Bestiaire Mineure II. Méth-odos Hési-ode
Saprophytes est un projet artistique collectif dont la mission est de rechercher, traiter et rassembler un matériel se trouvant dans un état de décadence conceptuelle ou de dénigrement. Les résultats de ces activités ont pour objectif de former des pastiches visuels et des nouveaux cadres narratifs, de multiplier des fausses interprétations et réarrangements.
Les Saprophytes créeront une installation multimedia dans la crypte de la Chalet Society – un rétour à la genèse du monstrueux et du bestial. A 18h30, une lecture orgasmique et polyphonique des extraits du célèbre texte d’Hésiode sera donnée en collaboration avec le public. Appel à participation à la lecture de la Théogonie* – les textes en français, grecque ancien et moderne seront disponibles. Les histoires sur le Chaos, Erevos, La Nuit, Ether, Uranus, Gaia, Eros, les muses, les dieux et les Titans permettront de mieux comprendre notre débordant héritage visuel, ainsi que ses ramifications contemporaines. Une procession digne d’un mythe sur le divin et l’origine humaine partira depuis la crypte vers l’extérieur.
15h – 18h Scare(crow)s abound
Atelier de fabrication d’épouvantails, pour enfants et adultes. En écho aux créatures étranges décrites dans la Théogonie et consacré aux riches traditions et pratiques de création de figures de gardiens, d’effigies, d’appeaux et de croque-mitaines, en allant des coutumes rurales jusqu’aux mythes, déités japonaises, bandes dessinées, chansons de Pink Floyd, comédies musicales etc. Venez avec vos matériaux et idées à fabriquer sur place ou ramenez des épouvantails prêts à être installés à la Chalet Society*. Les artistes vous enseigneront la pratique et raconteront des histoires.
19h00 Je est un autre, conference – performance avec Philippe Charlier
Le célèbre médecin légiste et archéo-anthropologue, auteur de Les Monstres Humains dans l’Antiquité, montrera une étonnante collection de monstres mythologiques et/ou réels et expliquera pourquoi ils concentrent notre peur de l’autre.
20h00 Remise du Prix du Meilleur Epouvantail
Un vote public désignera le gagnant qui recevra un prix secret. Les participants décideront soit d’échanger les fruits de leur travail avec d’autres participants, soit de les laisser à La Chalet Society pour assurer la protection des lieux.
Chalet Workshops
Family Business rentre en interaction cosmogonique avec les artistes résidents de la Chalet Society : une sérigraphie spéciale sera éditée par The Bells Angels aka Julien Sirjacq & Simon Bernheim et une performance proposée par Théodore Fivel.
Et finalement, la Full Moon Crêperie, rejoint la compagnie, en proposant une crêpe spéciale « Family Aquarius » (Verseau de Famille) en honneur du signe astrologique de notre invité, Family Business.
*Aucune compétence particulière n’est requise pour la participation à la lecture de la Théogonie ou à l’atelier d’épouvantails : il s’agit seulement de la pratique !

Les Grands Transparents. In Practice,

Family Business was until recently operating in New York. It has disappeared from its Chelsea space and has been conjured in Paris, where it will reappear emerging from the crypt situated in the alley of the Chalet society.
Responding to Marc Olivier Wahler’s curatorial flair for tricks and treats and getting into a loose, rather abstracted dialogue with the Jim Shaw exhibition’s vertiginous material and curiosity triggered concept, Family Business is inviting entities, people, practices into the spaces of the Chalet Society for a program under the general title: Les Grands Transparents. In Practice, and divided in Vol.I – December 2013 and Vol.II – January 2014

Programme
3pm – 7pm Saprophytes and their intertextual supplement to Hesiod’s Theogony, titled : Minor Bestiary II. Méth-odos Hési-ode.
Saprophytes is a collective artistic project that focuses on finding, processing and assembling preexisting material which is in a state of conceptual decay or disparagement. The byproducts of such activity are intended to form visual pastiches and new narrative frameworks, to multiply misreadings and recombinations.
The Saprophytes will create a multimedia installation, in the Chalet Society crypt, with the aim to go back to the roots, the genesis of the monstrous and the bestial. Between 6.30pm and 7pm, « an orgasmic polyphonic reading » of excerpts from Hesiod’s famous text, will be performed, by both, special invited guests and the present public, in and out of the crypt, in a procession worthy of the original myth about divine and human descent. Open call for participation in reading Hesiod’s Theogony*. The texts will be available in French, Ancient Greek and Modern Greek and participants will be guided, through the readings about Chaos, Erevos, the Night, Aether, Uranus, Cronus, Gaia, the muses, the Gods, Eros and the Titans to a better grasp of the relevant overwhelming visual legacy and its contemporary ramifications.
3pm – 6pm Workshop titled: Scare(crow)s abound.
Taking its cue from the Saprophytes’ research and the uncanny creatures described in Hesiod’s Theogony, the workshop is open to everyone and will point to the world wide rich tradition and diverse practice of making scarecrows, i.e. effigies, decoys, guardians and boogie-structures, which extends from rural customs, to comics, Japanese deities, mythology, a Pink Floyd song, films, musicals, books and more. Every one is invited to bring materials, information, ideas or even ready to install scarecrows*. Artists will teach the practice and stories will be recounted.
7pm Je est un autre, Lecture performance with Philippe Charlier
The famous forensic pathologist and archéo-anthropologist, author of Les Monstres Humains dans l’Antiquité, will show a stunning collection of mythological and real monsters and explain how they relate to our fear of the other.
8pm Awards Ceremony for The Best Scarecrow
The public will vote for the winner who will receive a secret prize. The fruits of the day’s labors can be exchanged among their makers or stay to protect the Chalet Society premises.
Chalet Workshops
Family Business enters into a cosmogonic interaction with the artists residents of the Chalet Society : a spécial silkscreen print will be edited by The Bells Angels aka Julien Sirjacq & Simon Bernheim and a performance proposed by Théodore Fivel.
And finally, Fool Moon Crêperie
is getting into fool mood business by offering a special « Family Aquarius » crepe in honor of the Family Business birth sign.
*please note that no special skills are required for participation in the Theogony reading or the scarecrows workshop: It is all about practices!
